Bamboo Flooring is one of the most exciting products to hit
the home improvement business in years. It is incredibly
durable (as strong as if not stronger than most hard woods),
attractive, affordable, and last but not least, environmentally
friendly!
Not only is bamboo flooring tough (it has been given the same
strength rating of maple and almost double that of red oak), it is
also water resistant. Bamboo is naturally water resistant (an
attribute because of the conditions of its natural environment),
and in its preparation undergoes a laminating process which gives
it even more resistance to water damage, gapping and warping.
For these reasons it is strongly recommended in areas such as
bathrooms and kitchens.
Although many people think that Bamboo is a wood - it is
not. Bamboo is a grass, and has a different look than
traditional hardwood floors. Its color is uniform and usually
quite light and has a very tight grain. It is so versatile
that it can be stained quite dark if desired, and even allows for
homeowners to choose between a vertical and horizontal grain.
For the environmentally conscious consumer, bamboo flooring is a
great choice. Bamboo plants only take 5 years to mature,
versus 30+ years for most hardwoods. Also, since it is so
tough, able to resist dents and scratches, it requires little
maintenance and repair. Less maintenance, less chemical
cleaners, and finally, less money out of your pocket.
